ICC World Cup 2019 - Afghanistan vs West Indies

Afghanistan, a relatively younger team in the whole ICC World cup 2019 tournament is playing its last match today against West Indies in Headingley, Leeds. The team hadn’t registered a single victory in the entire tournament but has impressed the lot with their performance in most of the matches.

Though comprised of some fantastic players like Gulbadin Naib, Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Hazratullah Zazai, etc., Afghanistan had lost in most of the matches with a huge margin. The team fought well in the matches against India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in which the opposing teams had to break a sweat to secure a victory. Though the team had failed to get into the spotlight in this tournament, it had gained a lifetime of experience that can help them for years.

Afghanistan’s match against West Indies today is it's final in the tournament and its one last chance to make a mark in the tournament. Given the team had beaten West Indies in the World Cup Qualifiers to qualify for the World Cup, it might be able to repeat its performance with an added motivation.

West Indies is a relatively stronger team but had managed to secure only one victory against Pakistan in the world Cup tournament. The team comprises excellent players like Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Carlos Braithwaite, Jason Holder, Shimron Hetmeyer, Nicholas Pooran, Shai Hope, Oshane Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell, etc. West Indies fought hard against teams like Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka but had lost matches with a massive difference against England, Bangladesh, and India.

The team’s inconsistency had cost them dearly earning them only 3 points from the 7 games they had played (1 point awarded due to abandoned match). West Indies’ performance had been unpredictable in the tournament and it is highly likely that it will be the same against Afghanistan today. The past losses might motivate the team to fight hard today but with a stubborn team like Afghanistan, it will be hard.
